about

For what is basically an alter-ego for Marc Kellaway (Distortion Girls, Flowers of Yes etc.) Dorothy Parker has quietly amassed her own career in parallel to Marc's other musical projects. After years with the experimental punk group The President's Heart, Dorothy made her recording debut as part of the queer pop duo Boy On Boy with the album Feel My Wet (CBC22) - a series of primitive pop songs in punky lo-fi. Compared to that album the sound of Several Hits are by several notches more accomplished with a newfound fierceness thanks to the rugged psychedelic production of Tanja Vesterbye Jessen (Distortion Girls, Amstrong etc.) who beside further FX drenching of Dorothy's already messy masses of stumbling beats and layers of drones has managed to smear her unique guitar noise stylings all over the album.

But as great as this album sounds, it is just as much about the words and how Dorothy force political statements, personal musings on work and sex life, abstract images, broken English, and pure nonsense to co-exist within the framework of the pop song - taking in radically altered versions of songs by Distortion Girls, Flowers of Yes and Boy on Boy along the way. Exactly this questioning of the framework and power of the pop song is what Dorothy has been probing for several years now through a series of still more politicalised performance lectures and concerts culminating in May 2016 with the piece "Silence & Trust" taking the form of an attempt to overthrow the current Danish neo-liberal/right wing government live on stage purely by means of the pop song.

This attempt at song-based revolution (however failed) might throw some light on how to approach as strange a beast as Several Hits. This is the pop album as utopia, unconstrained by convention of form, subject or sound, reborn from a slightly better dimension where the connection between words, song and the world are just a bit more intimate.

Please play it loud and dance!
